Hong Kong – Tosca di Angelo

Last Sunday, I celebrated a family occasion with a sumptuous lunch at Tosca Di Angelo, nestled on the 102nd floor of the iconic International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong. Securing a window-side spot added a touch of magic to our experience, providing panoramic views of the city that perfectly complemented the culinary spectacle we were about to embark upon.

The interiors of Tosca Di Angelo are a captivating blend of metal, glass, and marble, creating a glitzy garden anchored by a graphic marble floor, pillars, and two fountains. The highlight, undoubtedly, is the large open kitchen where the Sicilian virtuoso, Chef Angelo Agliano, orchestrates his culinary symphony. The restaurant’s Michelin star status is well-deserved, and Chef Angelo’s dedication to showcasing the refined flavors of the Mediterranean is evident in every dish.

Our culinary journey commenced with a warm welcome from Director Danilo Nicoletti and his attentive team. They guided us through an exquisite set of welcome snacks, each bite a miniature masterpiece. The Mediterranean tuna mignon, Breton Blue Lobster Terrine, and Tartelette with fennel cream were delightful, and the seamless replacement of the Tartelette due to my cucumber intolerance showcased their thoughtful service.

The 4-course weekend menu, priced at HKD 1038 (USD130), offered a curated selection for each course. An amuse bouche of Mazara prawn tartare with fennel and celery emulsion set the tone for what was to come – a delicate dance of flavors that showcased Chef Angelo’s skill and respect for ingredients.

To complement our meal, we chose two wines by the glass: Etna Bianco, Arcuria, Graci 2021, and Pacher Hof, Sylvaner Alte Reben Riserva, 2019.

Etna Bianco was a definite must, inspired by the chef’s Sicilian roots. Crafted from Carricante, an ancient Sicilian white grape variety thriving on the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna for over a millennium, this wine unfolds delicate notes of honeysuckle, broom, brimstone, and a hint of stone fruit.

Contrastingly, Pacher Hof hails from Alto Adige, situated in the northern reaches. Made exclusively with 100% Sylvaner grapes, a varietal synonymous with Alsace, this wine presents clear and alluring aromas of white fruit and freshly plucked flowers, accompanied by subtle hints of sweet spices. The palate experience is refined, savory, fresh, intense, and marked by a distinct mineral character.

The shared starters, Mediterranean Octopus with Cannellini Beans and Brittany Blue Lobster were both exceptional. The octopus was tender, enhanced by the Iberian Papada, while the lobster was a symphony of flavors with Puntarelle Salad, Capers, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, and Coral sauce.

Moving on to pasta, the Risotto Aquerello with Uni Sea Urchin and Mezzi Paccheri Mancini with Sicilian Red Shrimp showcased the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The sea urchin, a premium selection from Hokkaido, delivered a creamy, plump richness, while the al dente Mezzi Paccheri was a perfect vessel for the shrimp sauce.

For the main course, the Red Star Grouper in Matalotta Soup was a visual spectacle, with the warm liquid poured tableside. The rich soup and the scenic presentation made it a standout dish. The Iberian Pork Pluma was equally impressive, with a tenderness that spoke to the skill of the chef.

Dessert was a delightful ending to our culinary journey. The Ricotta Cream Cannoli and Tiramisu served with coffee granita on the side and Amedei Chocolate showcased the classic Italian flavors with a creative twist.

With a total bill of HKD 3800 (USD480) for two persons, inclusive of a 10% Amex Card discount, Tosca Di Angelo offers a premium dining experience. While the cost is on the higher side, the Michelin-starred fare, impeccable service, and breathtaking views justify the expense.

In conclusion, Tosca Di Angelo provides a symphony of Sicilian delights at a dizzying height. The overall experience was undoubtedly memorable.
